I have a few old books about birds. A couple of Forest & Bird Society guides from 1948, and the ubiquitous Mobil Common Birds in NZ series I grew up with as a wee twitcher. I was flicking through the former series the other night when I found this entry. "Probably extinct", and not all that long ago. It gave me a chill.

  • Damian Christie,

...The point being, it was included in the guide in 1948 in case anyone happened across one when they were out and about. :(

  • Islander, in reply to Damian Christie,

I’ve been researching huia for an extended poem for Huia, the publishers- did you know a German biologist is positive he saw one in the 1990s? (I’d give the ref. but my notes et al are in Oamaru just now, and I’m here in very wet Big O-)

O, and Te Tieke was my great grandfather’s name- he became known as Tiaki,
and is recorded as Jack/John T Miller in land court records. But in the family whakapapa books he is Te Tieke Mira-

but I didnt vote for tieke either-

Visiting bird - at least it doesn't move very fast. Easier to photograph.

Not a picture of the young Trevor Mallard,

Oh give me a home, where the takahe roam... This is Greg, the famously cheeky takahe from Tiritiri Matangi. Alas, no longer with us; may he rest in peace. Photo taken in April this year.

(Not shown: the moment he had a go at a little girl's sandwich, which caused her to shriek "That is a BAD TURKEY!")

Takahe need to be back south-

it’s like huia – they were fading from the north before humans got established.

Some birds totally bel0ng up here-

She does look a bit troubled. I can't say I can recall if she was exercised by the ducks. I could ask her now, but I don't think her recollection would be any better than mine.

I mean, the ducks not outnumber but also outweigh eh?

There were a large number of ducks.

Apologies, have posted this before, but the bird thread - and a large collection of ducks is a good excuse to do it again.....
