  • Kyle Matthews,

How low do you think is reasonable? There are plenty of nousey 12 year olds around.

Society seems to be disinclined to attribute responsibility to young people when it gives them power (voting), but inclined to attribute it to them when it has consequences (adult court).

It would be good to see a bunch of things put more into line with when the government considers you to be an adult. Driving, treated as an adult before courts, voting, contracts, marriage, independence from parents, various benefits, right to adult minimum wage etc.

I don't necessarily think that all things should be done at one age, but a law that applied some consistency (and maybe considered scientific evidence about development, decision-making, responsibility) would be a good start. It'd also make it harder to argue "10 year olds should be tried as adults!" and so forth.

  • Jackie Clark,

considering that at age 16 one can enter into a (supposedly) life-long commitment, legally create people, be jailed for "life", and drive a lethal weapon on the public roads, I would've thought being able to vote was a far less serious right.

Exactly. My thoughts are that, really, 16 year olds shouldn't really be allowed to do any of that either.

  • Kerry Weston,

But. glory be, all healthy. thriving now, and diversifying-

you ever want to to come fishing south - here is a good place-

Glorious indeed - can really only hope for a big dose of happiness for them. Wandering and painting down south is definitely on my agenda, a spot of fishing would be grand. Haven't been down the Coast for about 20 yrs - did a memorable tramp somewhere up behind Hokitika with a chap called Andrew Buglass who I believe has done alot of work preserving old huts. Loved it but will have to get off my studious butt and get fit for that sort of carry on.
